Below is list of the more popular SIP softphones, all of which are completely free to use. I occasionally run into folks who are looking to deploy softphones versus traditional, desktop-based IP hard phones….and am often asked what softphone technologies are out there that are compatible with SIP based IP PBX platforms such as Asterisk and Trixbox. X-Lite complements other non-free products offered by the company excludes certain popular features used within a company, such as call transfer. This post was originally written by Garrett Smith in 2008, and edited by Ying-Hui (Evy) Chen on Oct. In 2005, X-Lite was Internet Telephony magazine's Product of the Year. X-Lite 2.0 was audio only, while X-Lite 3.0 had audio, video, and instant messaging as well as being presence-capable. Past releases of X-Lite include: X-Lite 2.0 for Linux, which uses the old X-Pro code base, and X-Lite 3.0 for Windows and Mac OS X which uses the eyeBeam base.

In September 2010, CounterPath released X-Lite 4.0, which incorporates many of the features from X-Lite 3.0 but has a redesigned user interface based on CounterPath's Bria softphone.

Entering gibberish in these settings will not work, as to use Bria Solo you need an external Internet connection for it to talk to their servers before it talks to your PBX, even if your PBX is an internet disconnected intranet. This brings major changes, you can no longer just download the software and configure it, you configure it when you sign up - before download, this introduces major security and privacy risks, because to use Bria Solo and Bria Solo Free, you are giving CounterPath all of your private SIP login details, including passwords and exact server name. X-lite is no longer available or usable as of 2020, X-lite will not run, instead showing an EOL message, it also now becomes Bria Solo Free. It used the Session Initiation Protocol for call management.

X-Lite was a freeware voice-over-IP (VoIP) softphone by Vancouver-based CounterPath Corporation.
